Kutiburger: Contemporary Finnish Comics
Independent magazines and anthologies are the explosive fertilizer of the European alternative comics scene. Out of them emerge fresh authorial voices, unexpected approaches take root, and wild ideas sprout that often drive the development of the entire scene.
The 88th issue of Stripburger magazine, titled Kutiburger, is the fruit of a long-standing friendship between the Finnish Kutikuti and the Slovenian Stripburger. Together, we shaped, edited and are simultaneously releasing two special magazine issues – two “Kutiburgers.”
Stripburger #88 is dedicated to contemporary Finnish comics. It features short comics by thirty Finnish comic creators across different generations, artistic poetics, and narrative approaches, drawing a vibrant and exceptionally diverse picture of the Finnish comics scene. In parallel, Kuti #81 was published in Finland, presenting nine Slovenian authors gathered around Stripburger. With both issues, we celebrate our friendship and the existence of a rich, vibrant alternative comics culture.
The common theme of both issues is the exploration of the human relationship with nature in all its manifestations – as something that shapes our worldview and living environment. After all, nature and the independent comics scene share the same logic: both are rooted in diversity, interconnectedness, constant decay, and new growth.
Stripburger #88 also brings a group interview exploring comic art exhibitions, specifically spatial and three-dimensional comics in Finland, explaining how Kutikuti artists broke free from traditional comic panels. This movement beyond the grid is characteristic of contemporary comics, even in printed form, as the pages of both magazine issues demonstrate.
