Building community and future heritage through comics!

The Remix Comix international project was created as an initiative of six non-governmental cultural organizations from Slovenia, Serbia, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands. The two-year project focuses on contemporary comics, the potential of comics and art in community building or the empowerment of various marginalized groups. The project, which has so far undergone several stages under the direction of partner organizations abroad, is stopping also in Ljubljana during the Tinta comics festival, where, in addition to a three-day conference, it will hold also several exhibitions and a performance, which will be created at AKC Metelkova mesto by artists that are guests of the residential program.

Remix Comix connects a pleiad of artists, theorists and social activists from various artistic backgrounds; the project tries to draw attention to the comics as a specific medium of expression and question its fitness in the context of (public) art, education and overlooked cultural heritage. It primarily focuses on various marginal or socially vulnerable groups: the project explores practices and ways in which we can empower them and thus enable them a greater social affirmation. Remix Comix tries to give voice to the members of subcultural and marginal identities — so that they articulate their specific position in society in the public space with the help of art and, in this way, continue to build their own unique community through their work. The project questions the potential of comics and art as an emancipatory tool, which can contribute to fairer and more inclusive society. The goal is to challenge established models of heritage presentation, while also opening new perspectives on marginalized groups, striving for their greater cultural inclusion and thus for a more inclusive and just society.

In Ljubljana, the project is centred around AKC Metelkova mesto, which, as one of rare remaining autonomous spaces, offers refuge to various artists, members of vulnerable groups and diverse subcultures. Moreover, for the artists that are guests of the residential program in Ljubljana, Metelkova was also a source of inspiration. Artists in residency are: Terezia Unzeitigová (CZ), Boris Stanić (RS), Konstantinos Petrović (RS), Vladimir Ilić (RS), Nivin Baranbo (NL), Jos Daamen (NL), Kristina Kokalj (SI), and special guest Mazen Kerbaj (LB).

The events in Ljubljana will be wrapped up with a three-day international conference Comics and Community, dedicated to further contemplation on the issues raised by the project Remix Comix. What is the role of comics in society and what effects does it produce, what is its power in creating (artistic) communities and how can comics contribute to the improvement of social and cultural recognition or social inclusion of various marginalized social groups — these are some of the central questions local and foreign guests shall try to answer. In addition, an exhibition of comics created at Stripburger’s workshops with senior citizens and students with special needs will also be on view in the ZRC Atrium. Selected comics and books by conference participants will also be on display. The project will also include several workshops and a public guided tour of AKC Metelkova mesto.
